Sweden: Gardens, Flowers and Sunshine Sept 2016
Members had an amazing visit of gardens, flowers and sunshine over four days in Sweden. The Swedes could not believe how we could arrange such perfect weather! Starting in Malmo in the Western Docks with modern gardens and public spaces facing the sea, we then went on to a community garden run by a Yorkshireman. John has been told that his Swedish infused with Yorkshire is charming. Gunner Ericson took us around several parks including a new urban park followed by Katrintorp Manor, an 18th century estate. We then proceeded up the west coast to Sofiero with Lucia Dieden as our guide and Mikael Lofving the Head Gardener. Then onto Tjoloholm to relax and some even took to the waters. Around Gothenburg we continued on the historic theme at Gunnebo but followed with Peter Korns garden in total contrast. The trip ended with an excellent guided tour by Merika Irvine in the Gothenburg Botanic Gardens and our last stop was at the Gothenburg Garden Society garden. There are always a few bonuses which included some great meals, even more memorable due to the price of wine but then it is Sweden. And, the Tall Ships were in port having just sailed from England. Look out for a fuller report in the CGT newsletter.
'Sweden has a name for modern design; Malmo's Western Harbour and the new Millenium Forest are a real vision for the future of modern landscapes.' Jane (garden designer)
'The Garden Society of Gothenburg's gardens was enthralling as the quality of design and detailing was superb. I am not a plants person, but the attention to detail, a hefty budget and a seeming respect for these totally free public areas make for an experience unlike any other visit to a public park.' Ian (industrial designer)
'Sofiero is a paradise for a plantsman. The blue and white garden left me with a wonderful memory of the garden and Sweden.' Heather (gardener)
'Loved the public art and the attention to detail lavished on public spaces. Enjoyed it all in wonderful weather and with like minded, friendly people. Magic! Gordon (potter)
