CGTs & GHS: Latest merger news

In July 2015 the Association of Gardens Trusts (AGT) and The Garden History Society (GHS) merged to form The Gardens Trust (TGT). Link to the new website here

AGT and GHS were equally enthusiastic advocates for the understanding and protection of the designed landscape, receiving support from agencies such as Historic England and Natural England. However, since 2010, government funding for heritage organizations has been declining. This resulted in their ways of operating becoming unsustainable. In particular, the GHS, as statutory consultee for the historic landscape, found its ability to respond to an ever-increasing number of planning applications greatly reduced.

By combining resources, the new organization, including the network of County Gardens Trusts, continues to work towards the same goals of supporting owners, mitigating against inappropriate development and advocating the importance of the designed landscape through academic rigour, conservation initiatives and a dedicated volunteer base.
